The 32-year-old Argentine is considered among the greatest footballers of all time, with many believing he might be the best player in the sport's long history. Supporters have become accustomed to Messi causing the hairs on the back of their necks to stand up, something he has been doing since bursting on to the scene as a 17-year-old for Barcelona many years ago.
One of his first jaw-dropping moments came in 2007, when he was just a 19-year-old teenager. Messi picked the ball up on the halfway line in a Copa del Rey clash against Getafe, before scoring one of the best goals in the club's history.
The Argentine dribbled past four players and the opposition goalkeeper before finishing with his right foot, a goal that Barca fans voted as the Blaugrana's greatest of all time. His solo effort also drew frightening comparisons to Diego Maradona's famous goal against England at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
Another incredible moment produced by Messi came in the UEFA Champions League final in 2009, when he scored with a looping header past Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to secure the trophy for the Spanish giants.
Messi has never been known for his ability in the air, but surprised many when he got on the end of Xavi's cross, and the forward has often stated that his header against the Red Devils is his favourite career goal.
In 2012, the Barca man finished the calendar year with 91 goals for club and country, beating Gerd Muller's previous record of 85 strikes in 1972. No player, not even Messi, has gone close to matching the brilliance of that year since, with his record likely to stand for many years to come.
