10 Stars Who Were Snubbed From FIFPro XI Nominees Shortlist

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar were named among the 55 nominees for the 2018 FIFA World XI, but which stars were surprisingly left out? Here are 10 players who were snubbed from the candidates list.

Around 25 000 professional footballers from all over the world took part in the nomination process for the World XI, and the players with the most votes ended up on four positional shortlists.

Ronaldo, Neymar and Lionel Messi were unsurprisingly named among the candidates, while there were several stars who were left off the list but perhaps deserved to be in the running for the team.

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson was not among the five goalkeepers nominated for the side, despite his brilliant 2017/18 season with the Citizens. The Brazilian was pivotal to City's success in that campaign, during which he established himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in Europe.

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale was also overlooked as a candidate, despite his two goals in last season's UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool in Kiev. The Welshman scored 21 times across all competitions in 2017/18, and while that may not seem like much, he found the back of the net on more occasions that Karim Benzema, who was named on the nominees list, did.

Another player who should have perhaps been a nominee is Liverpool and Selecao forward Roberto Firmino. The attacker contributed to 44 goals in 54 matches last season, and had a far more productive campaign than many other names on the list.

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling's 23 goals and 17 assists last season were, surprisingly, not enough to get his name into the mix, while PFA Young Player of the Year Leroy Sane was also snubbed despite his 14 strikes and 19 assists in the previous campaign.
