Following Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United in 2009, Italian forward Federico Macheda was backed to become the “next big thing” at the club. He managed just five goals in 36 appearances for the Red Devils, however, and, after a host of loan moves, left to join Cardiff City in 2014. The now-28-year-old currently plies his trade in Greece with Panathinaikos
Over the years, a number of Portuguese stars have also been burdened with the expectation of following in Ronaldo’s footsteps, with the likes of Bruma, currently of PSV Eindhoven, and Valencia’s Goncalo Guedes tasked with trying to emulate the 34-year-old’s achievements.
Ivory Coast international Wilfried Zaha was once heralded as the heir to Ronaldo’s throne, but saw his dream move to United in 2013 end with a return to Crystal Palace two years later, while Anthony Martial is also yet to live up to expectation at Old Trafford.
Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain wonderkids Joao Felix and Kylian Mbappe are the latest two to have received the tag, and both players look more likely than their predecessors to reach the heights achieved by Ronaldo.
