The new year, 2020, has marked the start of a whole new decade, a new decade in which many of football’s favourite sons are likely to retire. There might be a long list of players who will end their careers over the next 10 years, but we have picked out 10 of the biggest names we will miss watching on our television screens.

At 33 years old, Real Madrid stalwart Sergio Ramos is unlikely to see out the next decade as a professional footballer, a job in which he has excelled since bursting onto the scene for Sevilla in 2003.

After two seasons in the first-team at Los Nervionenses, Ramos took his career to new heights when he joined Los Blancos as a teenager. The defender has since represented Real on 628 occasions, while he has played 170 times for the Spanish national team, establishing himself as one of the game’s greatest centre-backs in recent history.

His teammate Karim Benzema is another top star likely to hang up his boots in this decade, a striker who has put in thankless work since arriving at the 13-time UEFA Champions League winners. While he has not always got the credit he perhaps deserves, the 32-year-old has undoubtedly cemented his name among Real royalty.

Juventus legend Giorgio Chiellini is also likely to retire in this decade, as is FC Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique, but is there anybody fans will miss more than two of the best players to have played the game, Messi and Ronaldo?

The last decade belonged to the two forwards, and while they will still continue to perform at the highest level for a few years to come, this is likely to be the decade the two icons hang up their boots. Ronaldo turns 35 years old next month, while his counterpart turns 33 years old in June this year.

It is unlikely that football will see two players compete against each other like they did over the past decade, but we certainly hope that it will!
