The Brazilian was hoping until the last minute that he could leave Paris Saint-Germain during the window, which closed on Monday night, but had to stay in Paris in the end.
However, the 27-year-old is not the only player who was linked with a sensational transfer only for the deal to fail to become a reality.
Early on in the window, Neymar's teammate Kylian Mbappe was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. The French wonderkid sparked rumours after stating that he wants more responsibility and perhaps needs a "new project".
As a consequence, Mbappe was linked with Los Blancos, whom he had already visited as a 14-year-old. Many thought Real would go after the 2018 Fifa World Cup winner, especially after his countryman Zinedine Zidane returned to the Santiago Bernabeu hotseat. However, Mbappe stayed in Paris, with reports suggesting that Real will attempt to sign him after the 2019/20 campaign.
Paul Pogba was another star who was heavily linked with a move to Real up until the last day of the window. Zidane was believed to be desperate to bring the midfielder to Spain, but United's massive €200 million (R3.3 billion) valuation of the 26-year-old was too much for the LaLiga giants.
The Red Devils themselves were linked with a few big-money signings, among them Jadon Sancho, Paulo Dybala and Bruno Fernandes, but the English side only acquired Harry Maguire – albeit for a new world-record fee for a defender – Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.
Meanwhile, Gareth Bale was involved in another transfer saga. Real boss Zidane reportedly wanted him off the club's wage bill, and the winger was even left out of some pre-season squads in order to complete a move to a club in China, but that deal broke down at the 11th hour and the Welshman remained at the Santiago Bernabeu.
