Marcus Rashford is set to miss about six weeks of action, which means he could be sidelined for eight games after he picked up a stress fracture in United's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has maintained that they can find solutions within the current squad, but the club might still enter the January market before it closes in seven days' time.
So who could United sign?
AC Milan's Krzysztof Piatek has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, even though he has scored only four Serie A goals so far this season. Many, however, still remember his 22 strikes in the 2018/19 campaign, and it seems Milan would be prepared to let him go.
Another player who could be available this month is Borussia Dortmund's Paco Alcacer. The Spaniard has scored at a rate of one goal every 96 minutes since joining BVB, but has somewhat struggled this season and would be allowed to leave for the right price after the Bundesliga side bought Erling Haaland – another striker United were linked with.
Cedric Bakambu became one of Africa's most expensive players ever when he left Villarreal for Beijing Guoan, and has since scored 39 goals in China. However, being 28 years old, he could be keen on a return to Europe, with Arsenal and Atletico Madrid keeping tabs on him, according to AS.
Another option could be Mariano Diaz, who has fallen out of favour at Real Madrid. The Los Blancos youth product proved his goalscoring credentials at Olympique Lyon in the 2017/18 campaign but has struggled since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu. Los Blancos had high hopes for him and even gave him Ronaldo's vacant No.7 shirt, but he has scored only four goals since his return to Madrid, and the Spanish side is said to be keen to let him go.
Other options include Olivier Giroud, who has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea despite lifting the 2018 World Cup trophy with France, Fernando Llorente and Edinson Cavani, although the latter comes with lofty wage expectations.
