On a sweltering day in Shanghai, United took on Premier League rivals Spurs in the International Champions Cup, and for the fourth consecutive match, wantaway striker Romelu Lukaku did not feature, while Paul Pogba was named in the Red Devils' starting XI.
The match was an even affair in the opening 10 minutes and both sides came close to scoring, with Anthony Martial slamming an effort against Tottenham's post before Dele Alli drew a smart save out of David de Gea at the other end.
The Red Devils grew stronger as the match progressed and opened the scoring through Martial in the 21st minute. Working with a tight angle, the Frenchman sent a fizzing effort under goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, whose best efforts weren't enough to stop the ball crossing the line.
Pogba then went close with a long-range effort just before half-time, but Gazzaniga had his angles covered, and Martial's goal was ultimately all that separated the two sides at the break.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent out a completely changed line-up for the second half, which saw the likes of Fred and Marcus Rashford take to the field.
Spurs made a number of changes of their own and almost equalised through substitute Son Heung-min, whose lobbed effort beat Sergio Romero in goal only to land atop the Argentine stopper's goal.
Last season's Uefa Champions League runners-up did get their goal soon after, however, when fellow substitute Lucas Moura's deflected shot from range rolled past a helpless Romero.
The Lilywhites continued to threaten, with Son in particular looking sharp, but fell behind with 10 minutes left to play when Angel Gomes played a smart one-two with Juan Mata before curling an effort beyond Gazzaniga from a tight angle.
The Red Devils had the ball in the back of the net again just minutes later through Marcus Rashford, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The decision was of little consequence, however, as United ran out 2-1 winners.
