Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has sent a somewhat surprising warning to his strikers, despite Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all enjoying their most prolific senior campaigns to date.
Many worried about where United's goals would come from after United failed replace Romelu Lukaku last year, but all three of the Red Devils' strikers have so far been at their most prolific since August 2019, while Odion Ighalo has also chipped in with some strikes of his own since his arrival on loan in January.
While Rashford and Martial both sit on 19 strikes each for the campaign, 18-year-old Greenwood has contributed with 12 senior goals, leading many to believe United do not have too much to worry about in attack.
Speaking about his strikers recently, however, Solskjaer insisted they are still not where they need to be, and that he might have to look at strengthening in that department down the line if things do not keep improving.
"You need competition for places at Man United," the Norwegian tactician said, according to the Daily Mail.
"I've been here myself for so many years as a striker and Teddy Sheringham comes in, Dwight Yorke comes in, Ruud van Nistelrooy comes in, Wayne Rooney comes in.
"If you think you've got a divine right to be playing every game and are doing so well that we're not going to look for players to replace you, you're in the wrong place.
"We've always got to look at improving, and if they don't improve we might have to look somewhere else to get better because we have to be better. We're too far away from where we need to be and want to be.
"I've always had faith in the forwards we have at the club – Mason, Marcus and Anthony. They've all taken responsibility at different parts of the season and I'm delighted with all of them.
"I think all three have had a good development this season, but they can be so much better. I'm still waiting to see them blossom because there are parts of their game they need to improve on.
"They know I want the best for them, but they also know I've got to make decisions for the team and the club."
Altogether, Greenwood, Martial and Rashford have scored 50 goals between them, while Ighalo has managed to find the net five times in 11 games for the Red Devils.
