New Manchester United signing Donny van de Beek has admitted he was "pi**ed off" after his proposed move to Real Madrid broke down.
The Ajax star was reportedly courted by six clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Juventus, but it was United who moved swiftly to tie up the Dutchman.
Los Blancos were set to a complete a move for the player prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but then backed out of the deal despite everything being in place.
"As you know, everything was settled with Real Madrid," Van de Beek was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
"The clubs even had an agreement, but for some reason it didn't work out in the end.
"At that time I was pi**ed off because I didn't know whether such an opportunity would come up again."
His agent also provided some more details regarding the failed transfer, as well as the clubs that were interested in Van de Beek.
"In March, everything was ready for him to move to Real Madrid," Sjaak Swart said.
"But the pandemic delayed everything.
"The clubs don't make transfers if they haven't sold anything before. The whole picture has become distorted.
"Yes, they really wanted him. But they just couldn't get the money for a transfer. Even the biggest clubs struggle. Arsenal is a great club, but Manchester United will certainly be an interesting adventure."
