One of Manchester United's most expensive players ever has been compared to Sunday league amateur footballers following the Red Devils' 1-1 draw with Liverpool on the weekend.
United stopped Liverpool's winning run – the Reds had won 17 successive league games, including the first eight of the 2019/20 campaign, prior to the match – on Sunday, and , while they have won just two of their first nine Premier League gamesof this campaign, they can boast the fourth-best defence in England so far this season.
Harry Maguire, who became the world's most expensive defender when he joined the Old Trafford club ahead of the season, has played a big role in his team's improved defence, but has now been slammed by former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Rafael van der Vaart.
"He can do something, but if he is worth so much money, Virgil van Dijk is worth £300 million (R5.7 billion)," Van der Vaart told Dutch TV, as quoted by The Sun.
"If I am going to play with the amateurs on Sunday afternoon, I can easily find three who can do this. I mean that seriously.
"A bit silly to say, but I really think so."
This is not the first time Van der Vaart has been critical of Maguire – he had a go at the England international during the recent UEFA Nations League finals too.
"It's funny because, during the Nations League, I was doing work for Dutch television," he told Sky Sports.
"And I remember we were saying, 'Harry Maguire was by far the worst player on the pitch'.
"And then, two months later (he transferred for) £90 million (R1.7 billion)."
