Despite currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, United's 2019/20 campaign has been one of many ups and downs.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be looking at ways to strengthen his side in the January transfer window, although some believe that one marquee signing is all the club's supporters can expect for now.
Sporting skipper Fernandes is said to be United's top priority signing in the current window, with reports in Portugal suggesting that the 25-year-old goalscoring midfielder has already agreed personal terms with the 20-time English champions.
If he does arrive at Old Trafford in January, the ex-Udinese and Sampdoria player would be expected to go straight into United's starting line-up, but who would partner him in what would likely be a three-man midfield?
At the moment, both Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba are sidelined through injury, but they are likely to be two of the first names on Solskjaer's teamsheet when fit. While McTominay might suit a ball-winning, box-to-box kind of role, Pogba could be the manager's ideal deep-lying playmaker.
Although the Frenchman has been heavily linked with the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid in recent months, his agent, Mino Raiola, recently said the 26-year-old will not be leaving United this season, but Solskjaer will want him to remain a Red Devil for longer than that.
Fernandes, then, might be best deployed in an advanced playmaker's role, a position he excels in for his current club in Portugal. In 134 matches for Sporting, the right-footed star has scored 63 goals and assisted a further 51 strikes.
With the ability to pick a pass, the midfielder would excite those ahead of him in attack, especially a player such as Marcus Rashford, who has already scored more goals in this campaign than he has ever before in a single season for United.
The English forward has struck 19 times in 30 matches for the Red Devils so far, while Anthony Martial has also starred with a healthy return of 11 strikes in 22 appearances.
