Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has claimed that the reason Arjen Robben did not sign for the Red Devils before joining Chelsea was because he did not enjoy the smell at the club.
The iconic centre-back recently opened the floor for his fans on Instagram to ask him questions, and one of his followers asked him to choose between Ryan Giggs and Robben.
While answering the question, Ferdinand revealed that the Dutchman once visited United's training ground, but instead joined Chelsea because he did not like the smell at Carrington.
"I'd have to go for Giggsy, you know," he said in a live video on Instagram, according to the Daily Star.
"Robben was nasty though, oh Robben, you knew he was going to come back in on his left foot but the left-back couldn't deal with it.
"He was saying 'I'm going to come in on my left, you're not going to stop me' – and they didn't. What a player, Robben was great.
"We should have signed him at Man United. I think he came to the training ground, he walked around and didn't like the smell and walked off and went Chelsea.
"Couldn't believe it, man. He would have been great for us.
"But Giggsy was an unbelievable footballer, left wing, into centre midfield by the end of his career.
"Great footballer, great, great footballer."
Robben joined Chelsea in 2004, spending three years at the Blues before signing for Real Madrid.
