Drama ensued after just two minutes in to the tie as Angel Di Maria had a shot clawed off the line by Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. He kept it in and the ball was fired back towards goal at the edge of the area. It hit Boubacar Kamara on the arm, but it was at very close range and PSG's penalty claims were waved away.
It was a fesity start to the game with no less than four players receiving yellow cards in the opening quarter of an hour.
Despite PSG enjoying the lions share of possession Marseille broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark. Dimitri Payet hung a delicious free-kick in to the area and an unmarked Florian Thauvin swept the ball in to the net at the near post on the volley.
Both sides had committed ten fouls apiece as the sides went in to the half-time interval. Mandanda made his second brilliant save of the game in the 57th minute. Neymar created the chance with a mazy run before laying the ball off to Ander Herrera on the right. He picked out Pablo Sarabia in space in the area with a low pass to feet and he shot first time, but Mandanda spread himself wide to block it.
The defending champions had a goal disallowed in the 62nd minute. Idrissa Gueye burst through midfield and threaded Di Maria clear through on goal. He worked the ball inside onto his left and curled home a great finish, but the flag was up for offside.
Neymar had a golden opportunity to equalise seven minutes later. Juan Bernat played Sarabia in down the left channel and the Spaniard squared it but Neymar just couldn't get a telling touch to stick it into the open net from six yards.
Marseille coach Andres Villas-Boas would have been delighted with his side's defensive organisation as they managed to keep PSG at arm's length despite being put under some intense pressure.
A massive brawl ensued in the final stages with no less than five players being sent off their part. PSG were reduced to eight men with Neymar, Leandro Paredes and Layvin Kurzawa receiving their marching orders. Marseille were reduced to nine men, with Jordan Amavi and Dario Benedetto given early baths.
