Following his €63 million transfer from Manchester United to Paris Saint-Germain, Angel Di Maria has officially become the most expensive player in football history – here's why.
Many might ask: how is this possible? Would it not be Gareth Bale, who joined Real Madrid for a world-record fee of €100 million? Yes, that’s true, but if we add all his transfer fees together, Di Maria has cost an accumulated €179 million for all the clubs he has signed for.
The Argentine first left CA Rosario in his home country to join Benfica for €8 million in 2007.
Three years later, he made the big move to Real Madrid for €33 million. His stint with Los Blancos was, without a doubt, his most successful so far and he might look back and wonder why he ever left the Bernabeu.
He then joined Manchester United at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, for a British transfer record fee of €75 million, but he will now likely go down as one of the biggest, if not the biggest, transfer flops in Premier League history.
Di Maria has now managed to engineer an escape to Paris Saint-Germain, who reportedly already wanted to sign him last season but couldn’t because of Financial Fair Play restrictions.
His latest €63 million transfer to PSG has raised his overall transfer fees to an incredible €179 million, overtaking Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The outspoken Swede has already switched clubs seven times during his career and accumulated transfer fees of €169.10 million.
