With Real Madrid struggling this season, an AC MIlan legend believes Zinedine Zidane was "clever" to leave Los Blancos around the same time Cristiano Ronaldo did.
Real failed to advance to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in nine seasons when they suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to a youthful Ajax Amsterdam side in the second leg of their round of 16 tie on Tuesday night.
Manager Santiago Solari is now expected to be fired by the end of the campaign after enduring a week from hell, one that, in all likelihood, ended their chances of winning any silverware this season.
In addition to being eliminated from the Copa del Rey and Champions League, Los Blancos slipped behind even further in the title race after suffering a 1-0 defeat to FC Barcelona in a league El Clasico on the weekend.
Netherlands legend Ruud Gullit has since given his take on Real's fall from grace this season, saying that Zidane left the club at the perfect time.
"Zidane was clever enough to get out of there on time when they lost Ronaldo," Gullit told beIN SPORTS.
"That's the whole point. And whoever comes after that has a difficult task. You have no Ronaldo. That's 50 goals you don't have."
Gullit also claimed he was not surprised by Real's elimination from the competition they won for the past three successive seasons.
"It was not a surprise. Because seeing Madrid lately, seeing the first match they (Ajax) played at home – and they didn't deserve to lose – I saw opportunities, especially in Madrid," he added.
"Then you see the game Barcelona at Madrid, played them (Real) off the park as well. You see the midfield and you think to yourself, 'Oh my god. That is exactly the team they want to face!'
"And the worst part is this has been the easiest game of the season. That is even worse."
