Zinedine Zidane Asks Real Madrid Fans To Stop Jeering Forward
Manager Zinedine Zidane has pleaded with the Real Madrid faithful to not jeer one of his stars who recently returned to action from injury.
France international Karim Benzema has come in for a lot of criticism this season, and was given a mixed reception by Los Blancos fans against Deportivo La Coruna last weekend, when he made his return to the first team following a thigh injury.
The Frenchman, who, prior to Sunday, last featured for his team in El Clasico on 23 December, has struggled for form this season, but Zidane feels this is no reason for him to be on the receiving end of jeers and whistles.
"It's true, a month ago he wasn't playing," Zidane said, as quoted by FourFourTwo.
"He wanted to get back quickly and he's back with the squad now. The only thing he enjoys really is being out with us on the pitch, so it's good to have him back. But it's not good to see him getting whistled when he gets back. This has happened to him and could happen with others.
"What we need from the fans is that they're with us. Of course, they're within their rights; they've paid so can have opinions, but I want fans to be with us for 90 minutes. After the game, whatever happens, happens. But during the game, I want them with us."
Benzema has made 21 appearances for the Spanish giants this season, scoring five goals and assisting three further strikes.
