Xavi Hernandez: What Former FC Barcelona Boss Pep Guardiola Told Us Before We Thrashed Real In El Clasico
One of FC Barcelona's greatest El Clasico wins came in 2009, when the Blaugrana thrashed Real Madrid 6-2 in their own backyard. Former Barca captain Xavi Hernandez has now revealed how Pep Guardiola inspired that great performance.
Guardiola's 2009 side famously won the sextuple, and one of their greatest games in that campaign came at the Santiago Bernabeu, when Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry both scored a brace to inspire a 6-2 rout.
Xavi recently recalled that special performance, saying it was Guardiola's deployment of Messi as a false nine and his words before the clash that inspired the display.
"That was the game that he played Messi as the false nine," he told the Daily Mail.
"He knew that Madrid's centre backs wouldn't come out to press Messi when he dropped off so that meant Messi, myself and (Andres) Iniesta would always have a two against three in midfield.
"He kept telling us, 'That's where the game is, that's where the game is!', and we won."
Xavi left Barcelona in 2015 and has since lifted three trophies with Al-Sadd in Qatar. Recent reports suggest that the 38-year-old could soon begin his coaching career.
