Real Stars Surprised By Zidane's Reaction To Shock Cup Exit

Real Madrid's stars reportedly expected some harsh words from manager Zinedine Zidane after their shock Copa del Rey exit this week, but the head coach only addressed them for two minutes on the matter.

The Frenchman is under pressure at the club after being knocked out of two competitions in the same week.

First, Los Blancos were eliminated from the Supercopa de Espana by Athletic Bilbao at the semi-final stage, and then third division side Alcoyano knocked them out of the Copa del Rey.

The two defeats and Real's general form this season have cast doubts over Zidane's future at the Santiago Bernabeu, but, for now, his job seems safe, according to widespread reports in Spain.

He did address his players following their shock exit from the Copa del Rey, but in a calm manner rather than giving them a tongue lashing, which some of the players expected, according to Marca.

His talk came in a similar tone to his public statement after the defeat, surprising some at the club.

"It's not a failure, these things can happen. Now we need to focus on the league and the Champions League," he said in his post-match press conference.

According to AS, Zidane, who is the second-most successful coach in Real's history, still has the backing of the club’s board and president Florentino Perez.

However, another poor performance against Deportivo Alaves on the weekend or an elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Atalanta next month could see the situation change.

For now, Zidane seemingly has 34 days to stop the mini-crisis at the Santiago Bernabeu.
