There have been 147 meetings between these two giants of Spanish football since 1909, with the most recent Basque Derby ending in a 1-0 win to Sociedad at the San Mames Stadium, courtesy of a goal from Cristian Portu. \
It was an intense affair that saw the referee dish out seven yellow cards, all of which, interestingly, came after Portu’s strike in the fifth minute that turned out to be the match-winner.
While the home side enjoyed most of the possession, completing 352 passes to Sociedad’s 195, it was the away team that walked away with all three points, with Bilbao’s last win in the fixture coming in August 2019.
Many incredible footballers over the years have participated in the Basque Derby, which is sometimes referred to as the AP-8 derby because of the highway that connects the cities, including one of LaLiga’s all-time greats, Telmo Zarra.
With 14 goals in the fixture, Zarra is the joint leading top goalscorer, and it was the red side of the street he represented. Today, the Spanish legend is still revered as one of the best players of all time in the country, still holding records such as the top scorer in Copa del Rey history and the top scorer in Bilbao’s history.
Sociedad icon Jesus Maria Satrustegui also scored 14 times in the derby, with ex-Bilbao forward Dani in third place with 13 goals. Another former Bilbao player, Guillermo Gorostiza, features in fourth, while in fifth place is a player who represented both sides.
After enjoying a successful career at Sociedad from 1979 to 1986, Pedro Uralde joined Atletico Madrid for a single season before returning to the Basque region, but this time to play for his former rivals Bilbao.

More big names feature in the top 10 list, with the only non-Spanish player in the ranking being former Turkish international Nihat Kahveci, who played for Sociedad from 2002 to 2006, scoring seven goals in as many games against their fiercest rivals.
