Messi Sees Red As Barca Stunned In Super Cup Final

Spanish Super Cup Final

Result: FC Barcelona 2-3 Athletic Club

Date: 17 January 2021

Venue: Estadio Olímpico de Sevilla

FC Barcelona missed out the Spanish Cup title after suffering defeat to Athletic Bilbao in extra-time, where Lionel Messi was sent off for the first time in club career.

Messi was restored to the line-up after missing the semi-final on Tuesday along with Sergino Dest, as Martin Braithwaite and Oscar Mingueza dropped to the bench.

The Catalan giants enjoyed the early possession but had to wait until the 26th minute when Messi's free-kick found Ronald Araujo, who saw his header saved by Unai Simon.

Barcelona made their dominance count on 40 minutes as Messi's through-ball found Jordi Alba who picked out Antoine Griezmann in the box and the Frenchman sent a low strike into the bottom corner.

However, Bilbao managed to level matters on the stroke of halftime when Oscar De Marcos latched onto a pass from Inaki Williams before beating Marc-Andre ter Stegen with a neat finish.

Bilbao had the ball in the back of the net on 57 minutes through Raul Garcia's powerful header, but the goal was ruled out for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The Basque outfit should have gone ahead in the 68th minute when De Marcos cut the ball back for Williams in the box, but the Spanish forward blazed over from 10 yards.

Bilbao were made to rue that miss as Griezmann put Barcelona ahead nine minutes later with a close-range finish after some good combination play by Alba and Dembele.

Barcelona were minutes away from securing the title before Asier Villalibre equalised for Bilbao on 90 minute after turning home Muniain's inviting cross to send the game into extra-time.

Bilbao took that momentum into extra-time and went ahead three minutes in thanks to Wiliams' sweeping finish into the top corner.

Griezmann had a chance to pull the Catalan giants level on 112 minutes after getting on the end of Riqui Puig's at the far post, but he sent his effort well wide from close range.

However, Barcelona's hopes of a comeback were ended on 120 minutes when Messi was shown a straight red card for lashing out at Villalibre as Bilbao held on to clinch the title.
