Villarreal Comeback To Stun Atletico
Spanish LaLiga Report: Villarreal v Atletico Madrid 18 March 2018
Result: Villarreal 2-1 Atletico Madrid
Date: 18 March 2018
Venue: Estadio de la Ceramica
Villarreal came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Sunday night.
After a quiet start to the half, Atletico were awarded a penalty when Griezmann went down under the challenge of Juame Costa. The Frenchman stepped up and converted the spot-kick, 0-1.
The woodwork came to Villarreal's rescue when Koke rattled the upright with a powerful effort from close range.
The Yellow Submarine found it tough to carve out clear cut openings in the first half, as the Atletico defence was resolute throughout.
That proved to be the trend for the rest of the half as Diego Simeone's charges went into the break leading by the lone goal.
The second stanza started in similar fashion to the first, with both sides needlessly giving the ball away.
Villarreal introduced Nicola Sansone after the hour mark in place of the in-effective Roberto Soriano.
Griemann should have doubled Atletico's lead on 70 minutes when he was played through on goal but he sent a horrible strike into stands.
The visitors were made to pay for not getting a second goal as Villarreal leveled matters on 82 minutes courtesy of a fine header from Enes Unal.
Unal was not done there as he netted the winning goal in the first minute of stoppage time with a close range finish.
Atletico ended the game with 10 men after Vitolo was given his marching orders for a poor challenge on Sansone.
