Result: Sevilla 3-0 Real Madrid
Date: 26 September 2018
Venue: Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán
Real Madrid failed to capitalise on FC Barcelona's slip up, as they suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 17th minute as Casemiro lost possession, which allowed Jesus Navas to surge into the box and tee up Andre Silva, who made no mistake from six-yards out.
Sevilla doubled their lead in the 21st minute as Thibaut Courtois parried Navas' shot into the path of Silva, who slotted home for his second of the game.
Nuno Vazquez went agonisingly close to bagging a third goal in the 35th minute after being gifted time and space in the box, but his attempted lob crashed against the crossbar.
Sevilla were not to be denied five minutes before the break as some poor defending allowed Ben Yadder to sneak in at the far post and slot home from six-yards out to make it 3-0.
Los Blancos thought they had pulled a goal back ten minutes into the second half when Luka Modric netted, but the Croatian's neat finish was ruled out for offside.
Julen Lopetegui opted for a surprising change in the 70th minute as Modric made way for Dani Ceballos for the final 20 minutes after Mariano and Lucas Vazquez were introduced earlier in the half.
The visitors were forced to play the final 15 minutes with ten men after Marcelo picked up an injury and was unable to continue, while Lopetegui had used up all three substitutions.
Los Blancos were camped in the Sevilla half for the remainder of the game, but were unable to bypass the defence as the hosts clinched a clean sheet along with the big win.
