Griezmann Nets Hat-Trick As Atleti Thump Sevilla
Spanish LaLiga Report: Sevilla v Atletico Madrid 25 February 2018
Result: Sevilla 2-5 Atletico Madrid
Date: 25 February 2018
Venue: Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán
Atletico Madrid helped themselves to a 5-2 thrashing of Sevilla to keep their slim LaLiga title hopes alive, with Antoine Griezmann netting a hat-trick.
Sevilla, who named the same team that held Manchester United to a goalless draw in the Champions League, got on the front foot early on.
Luis Muriel pounced on a cross played in by Jesus Navas, which Jan Oblak parried back into play to allow Joaquin Correa with a follow-up attempt which narrowly failed to find the far post.
Miguel Layun made his first appearance since September when he replaced Navas, who pulled out through injury after 17 minutes.
After receiving a yellow card, Diego Costa popped up for the first goal seconds later after capitalising on poor defending in the 29th minute against the run of play.
Costa combined well on the edge of the box in pursuit for his second from an acute angle, but Sergio Rico did well to cut down the opportunity with an outstretched block at the midway point.
Antoine Griezmann made it two just before half time after taking two touches and firing into the top corner for an outstanding finish.
The France international completed his brace from the penalty spot after Costa was brought down by Rico five minutes into the second half.
Vicenzo Montella was forced to shake up his stall and did so with the introduction of striker Wissam Ben Yaddar for Correa.
That dampened their quest for a comeback after another defensive malaise allowed Griezmann to skillfully set up Koke to poke home the fourth of the evening.
It almost got worse for Montella as they came close to conceding a fifth, but Griezmann could unfortunately only strike the post later on.
Atletico's French striker finally got his hat-trick after he was left unmarked inside the box to side-foot home the fifth 10 minutes before full time.
Five minutes later, they conceded when Pablo Sarabia fired home a side-foot finish from Ben Yaddar’s reserve pass.
Nolito got in on the act after cutting down from the right to beat Oblak at the far post to set-up an exciting finish.
In the end, that’s how far they got as Atleti kept the pressure on Barca with a resounding display.
