Barca Drop Points At Stubborn Las Palmas
Spanish LaLiga Report: Las Palmas v FC Barcelona 01 March 2018
Result: Las Palmas 1-1 FC Barcelona
Date: 01 March 2018
Venue: Estadio de Gran Canaria
FC Barcelona failed to restore their seven-point lead over Atletico Madrid after they drew 1-1 with Las Palmas in LaLiga on Thursday evening.
Gerard Pique was given a rest and dropped to the bench, meaning Thomas Vermaelen partnered Samuel Umtiti in defence, while Philippe Coutinho was amongst the substitutes.
The visitors threatened early on, with Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi forcing goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola into impressive saves in the opening 15 minutes.
Barca did not have to wait that long for the game's first goal as Messi curled home a fine free-kick into the far corner in the 21st minute, 0-1.
Las Palmas struggled to create any clear-cut openings in the first half and were restricted to efforts from distance, none of which troubled Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
Two minutes into the second half, the hosts were awarded a penalty, which Jonathan Calleri converted to restore parity after Lucas Digne handled the ball in the box.
Ernesto Valverde responded by introducing Philippe Coutinho for Aleix Vidal in the 57th minute.
The Catalan giants were camped in the Las Palmas half for the rest of the second stanza, although the hosts were proving to be a tough nut to crack.
That was the trend for the rest of the half as the home side remained resolute throughout the second half to claim a point against the league leaders.
Barca sit five points ahead of Atletico, who they play on Sunday afternoon.
