Atletico Edge Closer To Securing Second Spot
Spanish LaLiga Report: Getafe v Atletico Madrid 12 May 2018
Result: Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Date: 12 May 2018
Venue: Coliseum Alfonso Pérez
Atletico Madrid have edged closer to securing second spot in LaLiga after defeating Getafe 1-0 at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on Saturday evening.
Koke grabbed the decisive goal for Atletico after just eight minutes after being picked out by Antoine Griezmann deep in the final third of the field, 0-1.
The visitors played long balls towards big Diego Costa, who was expected to knock them down towards on-rushing midfielders, although he wasn't having any joy.
Diego Simeone’s charges were allowing Getafe to have the ball after 25 minutes and looked to expose them on counter-attacks.
Costa should have doubled Atletico’s lead in the 28th minute after going through one-on-one with goalkeeper Guaita, but he shot straight into his arms as the visitors entered the break with just the one-goal advantage.
Atletico were controlling the play after the restart, looking to establish rhythm once again, although the visitors were comfortable after the hour mark as Getafe posed no threat going forward.
In the 77th minute, Getafe were awarded a penalty but Faycal Fajr failed to equalise as Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak dove the right way to make the save.
Fernando Torres should have buried the game for the visitors three minutes before time after being sent through on goal but he fired wide when one-on-one with the goalkeeper Guaita.
However, Atletico were still able to see out the win to consolidate second spot on the table with one game remaining.
