Suarez & Messi Rescue Unbeaten Barca
Spanish LaLiga Report: FC Barcelona v Alaves 28 January 2018
Result: FC Barcelona 2-1 Deportivo Alavés
Date: 28 January 2018
Venue: Camp Nou
FC Barcelona came from behind to defeat Deportivo Alaves 2-1 thanks to second-half goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou.
Philippe Coutinho was handed his first start for Barca after making a substitute appearance in the Copa del Rey during the week.
The Catalan giants dominated the opening exchanges of the encounter but they failed to test Ferando Pachecho.
Alaves took a surprising lead in the 23rd minute when John Guidetti slotted past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen following a swift counter.
Barca continued to dominate but they struggled to carve out clear-cut openings against a stubborn Alaves defence.
Messi nearly restored parity on the stroke of halftime but his free-kick was brilliantly turned way by Pacheco.
Ernesto Valverde opted for a change five minutes into the second half as Sergi Roberto and Jordi Alba were introduced.
Luis Suarez should have leveled matters in the 67th minute but the Uruguayan was denied by a fine save from Pacheco after being played in by Messi.
Suarez was not to be denied five minutes later, as the striker got on the end of Andres Iniesta's cross to volley home from a tight angle, 1-1.
Barca completed the comeback with four minutes remaining when Messi curled home a fine free-kick from just outside the box, 2-1.
That proved to be the final piece of goal-mouth action of the half as Barca maintained their unbeaten run in LaLiga.
