Magic Messi Free-Kick Sends Barca Eight Points Clear At The Top
Spanish LaLiga Report: Barcelona v Atletico Madrid, 04 March 2018
Full Time: Barcelona 1-0 Atletico Madrid
Date: 04 March 2018
Venue: Camp Nou
A first-half goal from Lionel Messi handed Barcelona a slender 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in a Spanish LaLiga match at Camp Nou on Sunday.
Messi combined well with Andres Iniesta in the 10th minute, with the Argentine finding space to angle a left-footed shot, but goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a good save.
Ernesto Valverde’s charges were on top of the game in the first 25 minutes, but Diego Simeone’s men were not giving much away.
Messi eventually broke the deadlock for Barca in the 27th minute with a free-kick that sailed over the wall and dipped into the top corner, 1-0.
Valverde’s troops continued to dominate after 35 minutes as they pushed for the second goal, with Luis Suarez hustling and bustling up front.
With eight minutes left in the half, Iniesta could not overcome a niggling hamstring injury and was inevitably replaced by Andre Gomes.
The Catalan giants continued to dictate play in the remaining stages of the first half but they failed to add to their ally and went into break leading by one goal.
It was a poor start from both teams in the second half, with neither side able to hold onto possession for long enough to create a decent goal-scoring chance.
Finally, in the 75th minute, Atletico managed to muster a scoring chance when Antoine Griezmann found himself in space on the edge of the box, but his fizzing shot went inches wide of the target.
Two minutes later, Barcelona thought they had found their second goal when Suarez put the ball into the back of the net, but he was adjudged to have been in an off-side position.
Atletico threw players forward in the final minutes of the game but could not find the equaliser as Barcelona walked away with the three points.
