Atletico Madrid Drop Points At Home To Girona
Spanish LaLiga Report: Atletico Madrid v Girona 20 January 2018
Result: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Girona
Date: 20 January 2018
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano
Atletico Madrid and Girona shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with goals in either half in the Spanish LaLiga on Saturday.
The hosts created the game’s first shot at goal after Angel Correa combined with Antoine Griezmann after 24 minutes.
Atleti produced another chance with Griezmann, who almost opened the scoring but was denied by solid goalkeeping after the half and hour mark.
The Frenchman though made amends minutes later following an excellent one-two with Diego Costa before volleying into an empty net.
Griezmann and Costa were causing all sorts of problems, and they nearly combined again in order for the game’s second goal, but was rejected by a stern Atleti defence.
On the stroke of half time, Girona threatened to draw level but Porto’s shot was firmly held by Jan Oblak in the Atleti goal.
The visitors tried to get back into the game before the break, but the hosts managed to held on to take a 1-0 lead.
Girona were forced into a change at the resumption of the second stanza, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou replacing Gorka Iraizoz.
The home side nonetheless continued from where they left off at the start of the second half, but unlike the opening spell, they found it hard to break down the visitors.
Atletico brought on Kevin Gamero in an effort to seal off the game, but his intention to ensure a second was refuted by substitute goalkeeper Iraizoz.
The Catalan club drew level against the run of play, through Porto who sneaked behind the Atletico defence to slot in the bottom corner past Oblak in the 73rd minute.
The result takes Girona up to eighth spot, as they left the home side frustrated who dropped two valuable points in the hunt for the top-four.
