Atletico Suffer Shock Defeat
Spanish LaLiga Report: Atletico Madrid v Espanyol 06 May 2018
Result: Atletico Madrid 0-2 Espanyol
Date: 06 May 2018
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano
Second-place Atletico Madrid suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Espanyol in LaLiga at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday evening.
Atletico had the early dominance in the match and looked to keep possession, but it was mostly in their own half.
The match opened up after 20 minutes, but neither side could carve out any meaningful chances.
Gerard Moreno almost broke the deadlock for the visitors in the 30th minute with a wonderful long-range strike that was turned away by Atletico shot-stopper Jan Oblak.
Chances were few and far between thereafter as both sides were probing without success, as the teams went into the break goalless.
Eight minutes into the second half, Oscar Melendo got the breakthrough for Espanyol with a cross-cum-shot that took a huge deflection off Stefan Savic and sailed past Oblak.
Diego Simeone’s charges were struggling to combine going forward and were missing the influence of Antoine Griezmann, who was on the bench.
Leo Baptistao nearly doubled the lead for Espanyol after beating his marker and cutting inside but his low strike was saved by Oblak.
Baptistao eventually made it two 12 minutes before time with a wonderful finish from the edge of the box.
The second goal took the fight out of Atletico as they could not put together passes going forward, as the Catalan outfit held on for a good win, which opens the way for third-placed Real Madrid to close the gap on second to a point when they face Barcelona in El Clasico this evening.
