Result: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Deportivo La Coruna
Date: 01 April 2018
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano
Atletico Madrid maintained their grip on second spot in LaLiga after they recorded a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday evening.
Atletico controlled the tempo of the match in the opening exchanges with the visitors playing with numbers behind the ball.
However, Deportivo recovered towards the first quarter of the first half as they threatened with a couple corners but nothing came of it.
Lucas Perez nearly opened the scoring for Clarence Seedorf’s charges in the 21st minute after surging into the box but Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a good save to deny the forward.
Diego Simeone’s troops were awarded a penalty in 34th minute after Saul was brought down in the box. Kevin Gameiro made no mistake from the spot-kick to break the deadlock for the home side, 1-0.
Deportivo started to press more with numbers but the hosts were compact at the back limiting their chances as Atletico went into the break leading.
The visitors were soaked up the pressure in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza but were looking to utilise the speed of Perez upfront on counter-attacks.
In the 65th minute, Someone introduced Diego Costa for Carlos Muñoz as the hosts looked to double their advantage.
Costa nearly made an immediate impact five minutes after coming on, as he sent Koke through on goal but the latter failed to hit the target.
Deportivo threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser in the final 10 minutes, but Atletico remained resolute to clinch three points.
