Result: Alaves 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Date: 29 April 2018
Atletico Madrid moved four points clear of third-placed Real Madrid after defeating Alaves 1-0 at the Mendizorroza in LaLiga on Sunday afternoon.
Diego Costa made a return to the Madrid line-up alongside Fernando Torres, while Antoine Griezmann was rested ahead of Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg against Arsenal.
However, it was the hosts who went close to scoring after 16 minutes when Munir was left one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but he hesitated and was eventually dispossessed off the ball.
Atletico had to wait until the 39th minute for a sight at goal, with Torres firing wide of the upright with an acrobatic effort.
That proved to be the final chance of the half as sides went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
Atletico went close to breaking the deadlock on 59 minutes through Vitolo, whose powerful strike was kept out by Antonio Sivera.
Alaves should have found the opening goal eight minutes later but Werner produced a good stop to keep out John Guidetti's curling effort.
Atletico were awarded a penalty on 70 minutes when Vitolo was brought down under the challenge of Wakaso. Torres stepped up but saw his effort saved by Sivera .
Eight minutes later, Atletico won themselves a second spot-kick after Wakaso was adjudged to have handed the ball. Kevin Gameiro took responsibility this time and slotted away the penalty.
The hosts pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but Atletico remained resolute to see out the rest of the game.
