Struggling Real Suffer Shock Defeat On Home Soil
Spanish La Liga Report: Real Madrid v Santiago Bernabeu 13 January 2018
Spanish La Liga
Teams: Real Madrid 0-1 Villarreal
Date: 13 January 2018
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid's poor LaLiga campaign continued after they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Los Blancos had the ball in the back of the net in the 14th minute but Gareth Bale's header was ruled out for offside.
The hosts went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock after 23 minutes, when Cristiano Ronaldo rattled the crossbar with a free-kick.
The chances were falling to Ronaldo and he squandered two opening in quick succession after 31 minutes.
The visitors were on the back foot for most of the half and they failed to test Los Blancos shot-stopper Keylor Navas.
That proved to be the trend for the rest of the first stanza, as the sides went into the break scoreless.
Villarreal managed to carve out a chance shortly after halftime, when Denis Cheryshev sent a low strike inches wide of the upright.
In the 60th minute, the visitors carved out another chance when Samu Castillejo picked out Carlos Bacca, who fired into the side-netting from close range.
With 20 minutes remaining, Zinedine Zidane introduced Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez for Bale and Isco.
However, it was Villarreal who broke the deadlock in the 87th minute, when Pablo Fornals slotted home from close range after Navas could only parry Cheryshev's shot.
Los Blancos pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but the Yellow Submarine held on for their first win at the Bernabeu.
