English publication the Daily Mail recently selected an XI of players who had a significant impact on Spain's top division, and there is no surprise to see footballers, past and present, from FC Barcelona and Real Madrid dominate the side.

Los Blancos legend Iker Casillas, who now plays FC Porto, was selected to stand between the sticks. The shot-stopper won numerous titles with Real and would probably still be at the club were it not for the major fallout that took place between the shot-stopper and Jose Mourinho.

What may come as a surprise for some is that neither Sergio Ramos nor Gerard Pique find themselves in the back four. Instead, Fernando Hierro and Carles Puyol were paired at centre-back, while two Brazilians occupy – Dani Alves, now at Paris Saint-Germain, and Roberto Carlos.

The publication went with a three-man midfield for their team, and the likes of Ronaldinho, Iniesta and Xavi did not crack the nod. Netherlands legend Johan Cruyff, former Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane and Alfredo Di Stefano feature instead.
