According to a 2010 FIFA World Cup winner who played with the Pole, Robert Lewandowski's potential move to Barcelona is motivated by the striker wanting to win the Ballon d'Or award.
Rudiger's Real Madrid Salary Revealed?
Lewandowski is having yet another outstanding season with Bayern Munich. Despite the Bavarian giants being dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by Villarreal in the quarter-finals, the forward has found the back of the net 48 times in 43 matches.
He also leads the race for the European Golden Boot, and looks set to defend his title.
These are accomplishments the former Borussia Dortmund striker has achieved along with other feats, and he has done so on multiple occasions. However, the one individual honour that has eluded him is the Ballon d'Or.
This is the fourth successive season the Poland international has scored at least 40 goals across all competitions, yet he has not won France Football's Golden Ball, and former Bayern star Javi Martinez thinks this is the reason why his former teammate is eager to move to the Catalan giants.
"Just today I spoke to him. He told me: 'Every day you have more grey hair'. Bayern's issue is that there is no clause," he said during the El Larguero show with Manu Carreno.
"If they don't want to sell you, you're screwed. I think that there is some possibility. I think he believes that playing in Spain, he would have had a Ballon d'Or or two. And that's why he wants to try.
"He has the feeling that he deserved the Ballon d'Or. It's not the same to play in the Spanish league, in Barca or Madrid, as it is in the German league. Do you prefer Real Madrid or Barca? I'll ask him tomorrow."
The pair shared the pitch at the Allianz Arena for seven years and won a plethora of trophies together for the German side, but like Martinez, who joined Die Roten from Athletic Bilbao in 2012 and left them for Qatar SC last year, it seems Lewandowski is keen on leaving Germany having played there since 2010.
