The Frenchman announced that he is leaving the club because he felt the team "needed a change" after lifting three successive UEFA Champions League titles, and added that he wanted to depart "when everything is going well" rather than in a bad moment.
He also revealed how he informed his former players of his decision, and that it was Los Blancos captain Sergio Ramos he spoke to first.
"The squad already knows," Zidane said at the press conference announcing his resignation, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.
"I've not talked to them all individually but they all know.
"I've sent a message to all the squad and I've spoken to Sergio Ramos.
"He is a leader, a captain and it has been a pleasure to share three more years with him."
Ramos responded with a heartfelt message on his social networks, thanking Zidane for his great work.
Zidane leaves Real as the second most successful manager in the club's history, having lifted nine trophies in two and half years in charge of Los Blancos.
