According to El Chiringuito, club president Florentino Perez has contacted the Frenchman – who left during the season after winning nine trophies – amid the recent crisis at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Perez reportedly asked Zidane to take over with immediate effect, but the former Los Blancos coach rejected the opportunity to return mid-season. However, the 46-year-old is believed to be open to stepping into the hot seat once again after the 2018/19 campaign.
The news come as a surprise as Zidane resigned after leading Los Blancos to their third successive UEFA Champions League title and nine trophies overall in two and a half years in the dugout, suggesting the team need new and fresh leadership going forward.
Perez, meanwhile, reportedly had an emergency meeting with his board after Real were knocked out of the Copa del Rey and the Champions League in the space of a week, and also dropping further behind in the LaLiga title race.
In the meeting, it was apparently agreed that the club wants Zidane to oversee a squad overhaul, which they feel is needed after the disappointing campaign so far.
