Reports: Why FC Barcelona Star Has Been Frozen Out By Manager
A certain FC Barcelona star has not featured much for the Catalan club in the past two months, and it has now been speculated why this is the case.
According to Sport, Denis Suarez was named in 30 out of 32 matchday squads up until Barca's loss to Espanyol in the Copa del Rey in January.
That 1-0 defeat drew criticism for many of the team's players, but arguably none more so than the Spanish midfielder.
Since his poor display, Suarez has been snubbed for eight of 13 matchday selections that followed and was injured for one game, while he did not play a single minute on the four occasions he was in the squad.
The last time the player featured in the league for Barca was in January, and the report speculates that his regular exclusion from the squad could be down to his low profile, with the likes of Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, Ivan Rakitic rated as guaranteed starters, while Paulinho, Philippe Coutinho and Andre Gomes are also seen as players who are ahead of him in the pecking order.
In particular, the arrival of club record signing Coutinho, who has a similar stature and playing style to Suarez, has impacted on Suarez fall down the pecking order.
The 24-year-old has also performed inconsistently when he has featured for the side, which has seen fans become frustrated with him.
Sport has also claimed Barcelona have to pay Manchester City, for whom Suarez played in their academy side between 2012 and 2014, €800 000 (R11.6 million) for every 10 appearances Suarez makes for the Blaugrana, according to contractual agreements, and apparently the Camp Nou club simply wants to save that money, even if it means hindering the player's progress.
The 24-year-old has featured 18 times for the Catalans so far this season, scoring three goals and assisting a further six strikes.
