Reports: Manchester City's Pep Guardiola Wants To Beat FC Barcelona To Wonderkid Signing
FC Barcelona have been heavily linked with one of the most sought-after 18-year-olds in football, but Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to beat his former club in the race for the player's signature.
According to The Guardian, the Citizens are set to go head to head with the Catalan giants over Ajax Amsterdam defender Matthijs de Ligt.
The 18-year-old, a full international with Netherlands, has been linked with many top clubs across Europe, including Tottenham Hotspur.
The player has impressed with his ball-playing ability from the back, and has shown maturity beyond his years to catch the eye of many.
Ernesto Valverde's Barca have reportedly been tracking the defender for quite some time, and are said to see him as a long-term replacement for Spanish defender Gerard Pique.
It has also been claimed the Blaugrana sent scouts to watch De Ligt when he represented his country against England in a friendly in March.
Guardiola, however, plans to lure the centre-back to the blue side of Manchester in this window. The Spanish boss is said to believe that De Ligt can be a long-term replacement of City captain Vincent Kompany, whose injury struggles have often got the best of him.
The Dutch youngster has already made 62 first team appearances for Ajax, and has been capped five times for his country so far.
