The 61-year-old replaced Ernesto Valverde at the Camp Nou in January, but has failed to lead Barcelona to silverware so far in this campaign.
The Blaugrana were knocked out of the Copa del Rey in February and failed to defend their LaLiga title, surrendering their lead over Real Madrid after the resumption of the league season following the coronavirus break.
Several names have been linked with the club's managerial post as a result, and whether or not Setien will still be in charge of the Blaugrana for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie at home against Napoli remains uncertain.
The first leg finished 1-1 in Italy, with the Catalan giants walking away with a crucial away goal. If they beat the Serie A side in the return fixture, they will face the winner of the clash between Bayern Munich and Chelsea, with the Bundesliga champions having beaten the Blues 3-0 in the first leg of their tie.
It is now being claimed that Messi – who was critical of his club after Barcelona's final LaLiga match of the season, saying they need to improve a lot if they want to have a chance against Napoli – would like to see Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa take over from Setien.
