After securing highly-rated midfielder Frenkie de Jong's signature for €75 million (R1.16 billion), FC Barcelona are reportedly set to table a staggering €110 million (R1.7 billion) bid for an Atletico Madrid superstar, which would make him the most expensive Spanish footballer in the history of the game.
According to AS, the Catalan giants have been linked with a sensational move for 24-year-old Atletico midfielder Saul Niguez, who has made more than 200 appearances for Diego Simeone's side since first being handed his Los Colchoneros debut in 2012.
Barcelona, who have strengthened their squad for the future by snapping up the likes of Arthur, Clement Lenglet, Malcom, Emerson and De Jong in the two most recent transfer windows, have made their desire to sign Saul clear by reportedly tabling an offer that would make him the most expensive Spanish footballer ever.
The Blaugrana have been long-time admirers of the midfielder and came close to securing his services in 2017. However, Atletico managed to tie him down to a nine-year contract in 2017, in addition to increasing the Spain international's buyout clause from €80 million (R1.2 billion) to €150 million (R2.3 billion).
The 24-year-old was also earmarked for a move to England, with Chelsea said to have been keen to pay the full amount of his buyout clause. However, with the Blues being slapped with a two-window transfer ban by FIFA, Barcelona are now reportedly frontrunners for his signature.
