Reports: FC Barcelona Join Manchester United In Race For Premier League Defender
Spanish giants FC Barcelona have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race for an out-of-favour Premier League defender.
According to The Sun, the Blaugrana are keeping a close eye on Tottenham Hotspur and Belgium centre back Toby Alderweireld.
The 28-year-old, who is under contract until 2020, is reportedly refusing to sign a new deal with the London club unless he is offered a wage of £180 000 (R2.9 million).
Barca manager Ernesto Valverde, who is looking bolster his defensive options, is apparently tempted to bring the Belgian back to LaLiga, but knows he will face a stern test to sign him with the Red Devils lurking.
Alderweireld is familiar with life in the Spanish top flight, having played for Atletico Madrid before moving to North London.
Tottenham are said to be in no rush to sell the defender, but are aware that the two aforementioned clubs may consider activating his £25 million (R403 million) release clause.
The Belgian has made 105 appearances for Spurs since joining them in 2015, scoring six goals and assisting three further strikes. However, he has made only 17 appearances for the Lilywhites so far in this campaign.
Which club do you think Alderweireld would be better suited to, Barcelona or United? Have your say in the comments section below.
