The Catalan giants are understood to be closing in on an agreement with Gremio for the signature of 21-year-old midfielder Arthur.
Barca representatives will meet with the club next week to advance negotiations, with a deal worth €30 million (R436 million) to be discussed, according to Brazilian news outlet UOL.
However, in order for Barca to register Arthur, they would have to make a decision on one of their other South American players. The Catalan giants have already filled their non-European players quota with Paulinho, Philippe Coutinho and Yerry Mina.
AS have suggested that the Blaugrana have asked Coutinho to apply for a Portuguese passport – he qualifies via his wife, who is Portuguese – in order to free up the third non-European slot.
In addition, Barca also still need to negotiate a transfer fee with Arthur's representatives, who reportedly own 40% of the player's rights.
