Los Blancos sold Ronaldo to Juventus for a fee of €100 million (R1.66 billion) plus another €17 million (R281 million) in add-ons, while Mateo Kovacic joined Chelsea on loan. In addition, they had to replace former manager Zinedine Zidane, who opted to quit after lifting nine trophies in just two and a half years.
Morocco right-back Achraf Hakimi joined Borussia Dortmund on loan, while midfielder Omar Mascarell was sold to Schalke.
New coach Julen Lopetegui has brought in Thibaut Courtois, Alvaro Odriozola, Brazilian wonderkid Rodrygo, who will only join the club in January, and goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. Vinicius Junior also joined up the squad, although his transfer was announced last season already.
However, the coach has reportedly asked for more new arrivals and is still looking for a back-up striker with a goalscoring pedigree, with Borja Mayoral and Raul de Tomas understood to not be at the level required by the coach. Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi has been mentioned, but the Serie A transfer window closes this week and it does not look like this move will happen.
In addition, Lopetegui also wants to add a centre-back to his playing roster and would prefer to loan out Jesus Vallejo, who is currently fourth choice behind Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Nacho, and is considered to not yet be ready for continuous first-team football at the club.
In midfield, Lopetegui has expressed a desire to bring in another player after Kovacic was sent out on loan, with Juve's Miralem Pjanic and Lazio's Sergej Milinkovic-Savic still linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard were rumoured to be preferred targets to replace the club's record goalscorer Ronaldo, but none of them seem to be an option in this window.
