After failing to advance to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in nine seasons, a Real Madrid superstar has admitted that he thinks the LaLiga giants have "had a shi**y season".
Los Blancos suffered a bruising 4-1 defeat to a youthful Ajax Amsterdam side in the second leg of their round of 16 clash on Tuesday night, succumbing to a 5-3 aggregate defeat altogether.
In the space of a week, Santiago Solari's side suffered two home defeats to rivals FC Barcelona, resulting in their elimination from the Copa del Rey and effectively ending their chances of winning the league title, and were dumped out of the UCL too.
Real defender Dani Carvajal gave a frank assessment of how the Spanish giants have performed this season after their latest loss.
"We've had a shi**y season," he told Movistar+.
"I don't see this as the end of a cycle. We have a young team, but the margin for improvement is enormous; we have to face that and not shy away.
"In one week, we've lost everything. We can't look for excuses tonight. Our opponent was better than us and deserved to progress.
"I don't think I've ever had this feeling of pain. I don't know how to explain it. It's never easy to bounce back from two defeats against Barcelona and two errors put us 2-0 down. However, 3-0 killed us."
Carvajal has made 30 appearances across all competitions this season, finding the back once and being on hand to assist five further goals.
