Los Blancos needed a second-half goal from Isco to salvage a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao at San Mames, where they have now failed to win in their last four games.
Striker Mariano Diaz took the No.7 jersey after completing his return to Real from Olympique Lyon in the previous transfer window.
The former Spain coach felt bringing on Lucas Vazquez rather than Mariano as Gareth Bale needed the rest.
“Mariano could’ve been an option, but we felt Gareth needed a rest so we decided to bring Lucas on and we posed Athletic enough problems after that.
