The Frenchman joined Los Blancos on 4 January 2016, taking over from Rafael Benitez, and had since surpassed all expectations.
He lifted nine titles during his stint at the club, among them three successuive Champions League trophies. He also leaves the club with an unbeaten record in finals, having won every one of the eight deciders he has contested as Los Blancos boss.
"I've taken the decision to not continue next year as Real Madrid coach," he confirmed at a press conference called by the club.
"It might be a ‘until soon’ as Madrid have given everything to me. I will be here close to this club all my life."
Zidane took charge of 149 games at Madrid, losing just 16 of them. With his nine trophies at the Santiago Bernabeu, the 45-year-old effectively won one trophy every 17 games he was in charge of the club.
He leaves the club as the second most successful manager in its history, with only Miguel Munoz having won more titles at Real (14).
