The 31-year-old has joined the Catalan giants in an initial loan deal, which can be made permanent for a fee of €8 million (R126 million) at the end of the season.
Boateng, who scored five goals in 15 appearances for Sassuolo in the first half of the campaign, passed a medical on Tuesday and was later presented by the club in a press conference.
He was given the No. 19 shirt at Camp Nou and discussed which position he will play at his new club.
The attacking midfielder becomes Barcelona's second signing of the window, following the arrival of Jeison Murillo, also on loan, from Valencia. The LaLiga leaders are Boateng's 11th club in Europe.
