A newly-signed FC Barcelona signing, who joined the LaLiga giants in a staggering €75 million (R1.16 billion) move has revealed his desire to succeed at the club in a bid to follow in Lionel Messi's footsteps with the Catalan giants.
Barcelona beat off reported competition from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain to secure the services of Frenkie de Jong on a five-year deal, making him the third most expensive transfer ever made during the January transfer window history.
The former Ajax Amsterdam star, who is set to be unveiled at the Camp Nou in July, spoke about why he snubbed advances from the Ligue 1 and Premier League giants.
"Initially the interest went through my agent, who talked to the clubs, but when it became more serious, I came in." he was quoted as saying on Mirror.
"Paris Saint-Germain was a good option, but Barcelona has always been a dream, and I'm happy with my five-year contract.
Despite only being 21-years of age, the Dutch international spoke of his intention to do well and retire with Barcelona, citing five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi, as the ideal example of a success story at the club.
"If I succeed, then the chances are that I will never leave, just like Messi.
"In July I sign my official contract in Barcelona and I am also being presented to the fans and the press.
"Playing with 21 (as a squad number) would be nice, because that is kind of my number.
"There is an idea to play with 'Frenkie' on the back of the shirt. Nike prefers that from the point of view of merchandising. I'm not sure if I want to."
De Jong has made a total of 31 appearances for Ajax in all competitions this season, finding the back of the net on four occasions, while being on hand to register one goal.
