Result: Real Madrid 1-1 Real Valladolid
Date: 24 August 2019
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu
Karim Benzema's impressive strike was not enough to secure the spoils for Real Madrid, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Valladolid in LaLiga on Saturday evening.
James Rodriguez earned his first start for Los Blancos in over two years alongside Gareth Bale and Isco, who were all linked with departures before the season.
James was certainly looking to make the most of the opportunity afforded to him by Zinedine Zidane as he went agonsingly close with an effort from the edge of the box on 20 minutes.
The chances continued to fall for the home side as Benzema squandered a couple openings midway through the half as frustration began to grow in the Bernabeu.
Unfortunately for the fans in attendance, that proved to be the trend for the rest of the first half while Thibaut Courtois endured a quiet opening 45 minutes between the sticks.
In an attempt to change the fortunes in the attack, Zidane withdrew James after 58 minutes and introduced the highly-rated Vinicius Junior.
Off-season signing Luka Jovic came on ten minutes later and almost made the perfect impact when he rattled the frame of the goal with a towering header.
The deadlock was eventually broken on 81 minutes as Benzema controlled a pass from Kroos before finding the bottom corner with a superb finish from the edge of the box.
The Bernabeu was silenced seven minutes later as Sergi Guardiola netted his second goal of the season with a neat finish at the far post to seal a point for Valladolid.
