Result: Real Madrid 1-0 Espanyol
Date: 21 September 2018
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid moved to the top of the LaLiga standings after securing a 1-0 victory over Catalan outfit Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Los Blancos came into the clash looking for three points after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Athletic Bilbao last weekend.
Isco almost snatched the lead for the hosts in the fifth minute with a strike from the edge of the box that sailed slightly wide of the upright.
Espanyol struggled to get out of their own half after 25 minutes, with the European champions dominating possession.
Casemiro was unlucky not to have found the back of the net for Julen Lopetegui’s charges in the 35th minute with a downward header that sailed agonsingly wide of the post as Real edged closer.
Marco Asensio finally broke the deadlock for Madrid four minutes before the break, finishing off Luka Modric’s deflected shot with a clinical strike inside the box, 1-0.
Shortly after the break, Isco had chance to double the lead for the hosts and after being gifted time and space on the edge of the box, he bent one just wide of Diego Lopez's goal.
The hosts were guilty of leaving pockets of spaces behind after 65 minutes whenever they ventured forward which gave Espanyol chances on the break.
Sergio Ramos almost got the two-goal cushion for Los Blancos 15 minutes before time with a bullet header inside the box but Lopez, who is a former Los Blancos player, kept his team in the game with a brilliant save.
The visitors had a late surge towards the end looking for the equaliser, but they left it too late to go forward with positive intent and crashed to defeat in the end.
